Culture and Learning
The author, repeatedly speaks of culture by comparing lower socio-economic minority groups with middle income white groups. In this manner I believe the comparison is little skewed. While the author acknowledges a wealthy light skinned Mexican American lesbian and a working class Mexican American lesbian may have little in common, the author fails to make the same connection between middle class Mexican American and a working class Mexican American. That is these groups may also not have a lot in common. The same is true for middle class and working class African Americans. Whenever the discussion about diversity is discussed, the minority groups are discussed as a monolithic group. And usually the lower slower working classes are picked as representatives of these groups. While I will acknowledge that the vast majority of these groups may be the working poor and thus worthy of attention and discussion they are not the sole representatives of the ethnic groups. The problem as I see it, is that by mixing economics factors with cultural factors it sets up a situations where every African and Mexican American are seen as under achieving and needing extra help. The other side of this approach is that the academic expectations for these groups are also lowered. In vivid example of this kind of well meaning intention that end up hurting the very group of children we are seeking to help is schools district 65’s policy regarding Hispanics. If your child has a Hispanic last name and you do not want to participate in the bilingual program than you as the parent needs to write a letter stating that you are aware of the bilingual options but are choosing to opt out. No other racial group is subject to this criterion. It is time to examine the numbers closely. I would like to see how middle class African American and Mexican Americans perform compared to the racial groups of the same socio-economics status. I have a feeling our discussion may take a different slant.

Once again I have the same objection as I did with the previous article (Culture and Learning). These authors too make the same mistake of comparing culture to socio-economics. Yes, I do believe schools teacher and administrations need to accommodate a diversified curriculum reflective of the diverse nature of our nation. I believe African American and Mexican American history needs to be studied. However I have objections to studying these histories in the current ethno-centric manner. Both African and Mexican Americans are Americans and thus their history if not one that requires a pre fix. They histories are the history of our nation. While we study the founding fathers, we should also study Frederick Douglas, George Washington Carver and Dr. King as great American patriots. I challenge my fellow students to check out NEIU library, and see how books about these men and the civil rights movement is classified. It is very telling that NEIU chose to classify these books as Black studies or Black history while it is very clearly the history of our nation. It is said the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Here is an example of good intentions gone awry. In the same fashion I remember last week when we were looking at the artwork one student was surprised to hear the artist was American. I am sure the art students too were surprised to hear the artist was in fact American. This clearly because when we study art we study the western artists. Every other artist is some exotic minority that is worthy of study only in the manner of ethno-centric art. That this these artist must have a pre fix designating their ethnic background, while the true artist such as Van Gogh and Picasso need no such prefix. It is this need to classify nonwestern people by their ethnic background that I object. The intention is well meaning but this approach merely reinforces our differences. As I a minority I don’t want to be singled and made to feel different from every other American just to cater to the need by some to celebrate my diversity. Keep your well meaning hand off of my diversity!!!

How to you reach this "love" understanding with you students, their identities and families? I think you need to find a real appreciation for their culture and incorporate it in your teaching and treatment of each and very student.
I think you need to be willing to think out of the box and relate to their values and interests and incorporate them in your teaching.. In other words walk in their shoes and try and understand what it is like to be them. This can take a real conscious effort on the part of a teacher and is difficult to maintain. But can be the way to success with for students.
